1 mile a day (at least) for 2 years straight.
This last week has been interesting. Never dug my car out, so I've been walking to and from work for the last week.
Dec 28: Prospect Park

Dec 30: Prospect Park
Dec 31: Prospect Park
So I run in the park on my way home. Figure I'm walking about 3 miles a day (including the run). I feel a whole lot healthier this week. My body's feeling it though.
Happy New Year! Onto year three - and post 300! :)

Blizzard 2010
Ah, snow.
So much snow that my car was buried this morning. So I walked to work. And then, when I was walking home, I decided to do my run.
Dec 27: Prospect Park
Cowboy boots, winter coat. Yep. Got my run in. :)

Snowy & Bright
and may all your day-after-Christmases be white...
Snowstorm's here. Left CT at 9 am to get back to Brooklyn by 10:30, just as the snow was beginning to fall here. Waited until there was at least a coating on the road to go out to run around 1 pm.
Dec 26: Prospect Park 1 mile
Really have to clean my apartment. Really lacking in motivation to do so.

Productive? Not So Much...
Saturday, my "productive" day ended up being a 5 1/2 hour ICU/rad onc/hemorrhaging disaster of a day. So much for all the stuff I wanted to do.
Sunday, I got up and went to the hospital early. Rounded, radiated, and got out by 9:30 to get back home to do my run.
Dec 19: Prospect Park 1 mile
Then it was off to MSG to watch the UConn women win their 88th straight game. Go Huskies!
Today was a great OR day. Took 2 of the biggest, stickiest nodes that I've ever encountered yet off the IVC without getting into it. Maybe I can actually do this after all.
Dec 20: Around the block
My left knee hurts, I had something in my right shoe, but it's done. 11 days left of this year!

Sunny Days
Not warm days, mind you. But sunny ones.
Dec 18: Prospect Park 1 mile
My nighttime layers were a little too much, even though it was only 28 degrees out.
Today's supposed to be a productive day at the hospital. We'll see how that goes.

Ohh...
That was a long week.
Dec 13: Run around 8 pm after dealing with a crashing patient all day.
Dec 14: Run at 11:30 pm after a long day in OR.
Dec 15: Run at 11:30 pm after a dinner lecture.
Dec 16: Run at 9 pm after dinner with the team.
Dec 17: Run at 8 pm after another day in the office.
It's my weekend on and I've got lots to accomplish tomorrow. Plus, Sunday is UConn Basketball Day ~ going to watch the women win their 88th game to tie UCLA's record!

Long Island
This was a good, much needed weekend with friends.
Dec 10: Around the block
Then it was drinks with Patricia. Maybe a few too many drinks, actually.
Dec 11: Prospect Park 1 mile
Then it was off to LI. Met Jenny at Borders, then had lunch and a pedicure with Loren, then met up with Eva, Chris, Lexi, Penny, Lori and Brian for dinner at Harvards. Then went to Chris' and watched a movie and fell asleep on the couch. Woke up for breakfast at Maureen's Kitchen with LanNa, Diana, Cara, Loren and Brian and then went to the mall with the girls for a bit until I had lunch with Michael. Then I came home.
Dec 12: Prospect Park 1 mile
Now I'm trying to motivate myself to clean my apartment. In the interim, I'll watch tv on the computer.

708
Was thinking on my run tonight that I should have been around day 700. Turns out it was more like day 708.
Dec 9: Up the hill
That's 933 days left of fellowship too. The intersection of the number of days left of fellowship and the number of days I've run will probably be my next significant number day. :)

It's a Different Kind of Cold
See, I ran in true sub-zero weather last year at this time in Montana. How is it that I am COLD on my runs in 25-30 degree weather in NY?
Dec 8: Around the block
And my body can definitely run farther. My mind doesn't want to though. Might be the cold. And the late hour of the night...

The Weekend
So far, not too bad. Yesterday I ran, rounded, went to brunch, read for 3 hours at Connecticut Muffin, came home, went through some piles of crap in the apartment, ordered Freshdirect for a late delivery tonight and slept fairly well.
Today, I woke up with my to-do list already made. So far, it's been breakfast, coffee, internet, run. Shortly it will be shower and hospital.
Nov 27: Prospect Park 1 mile
Nov 28: Prospect Park lower loop (1.75 I think)
So I am going to try to run more. Not sure exactly what, if any, races I'm going to be doing coming up but I might as well start running more. It's easy enough to do.

Thanksgiving
How much has happened in a year...
Nov 24: Around the block
Nov 25: Prospect Park 1 mile
Probably should have run when the weather was still nice out. Now it's rainy and dreary and I'm trying to muster the energy to go to Patricia's for dinner.

Methodist Days
I love escaping to Methodist from Downstate. It's wonderful. And even better - today, I actually felt like a fellow. I gave a lecture to the Methodist residents and then did the robot with Gorelick - and he let me sit at the console!
All in all, two late but very good days!
Nov 22: Up the hill to 11th (or right before - to the closed section about 4/5th of the way up)
Nov 23: Up the hill to 11th (yeah, same as above)
Tomorrow, we're at KCH. Ugh. But then it's Thanksgiving!

The End of Vacation
All good things must come to an end. Though I haven't completely decided if this was a good or a bad vacation, it was relaxing, it was definitely deserved. I also haven't decided if I really want to go back to work tomorrow.
Nov 21: Prospect Park 1 mile
Now, I really need to do something about this procrastination...though I guess technically I'm still on vacation...

Day(s) at the Beach
Friday was pre-vacation so we high-tailed it out when the day was done at 5 pm.
Nov 12: Prospect Park 1 mile - VACATION BEGINS!
Off to dinner and drinks with Nikole after. Then up early in the morning to drive to PA with a return trip planned that night to pack for the beach...
Nov 13: Around the block after Lucas' birthday party
Then it was time for a plane and some sun, surf, sand and liquor in the Dominican Republic. The resort was eh but I finally unwound by Tuesday/Wednesday, which is really what vacation was about.
Nov 14: Golf course at dusk

Veteran's Day
A day off midweek is nice. A Thursday off which means no County Clinic or educational time is even nicer, because it means I didn't need to prepare for Tumor Board or anything like that.
Nov 10: Up the hill to 11th
Nov 11: Prospect Park 1 mile
It also meant I could sleep in (except I was getting calls all night) and run during daylight hours. It means that I should finish cleaning my apartment, finish my laundry so I can pack for vacation. Because tomorrow night it's dinner with Nikole, Saturday it's PA for Lucas' birthday, and Sunday I'm on a jet plane!!!

Got up this morning to do my run at 8 am (which was previously 9 am) and it was COLD out! Time for hats and gloves my friends! Guess fall gave way to winter already...

And It's Winter!
Man, has the temperature dropped in the last few days! I swear I was running in warm weather clothes up til now. I've pulled out the ski hat, my blue NB running shirt and my thicker tights. It's not Montana-cold, but there's that bite to the air that I missed when I was out West.

Breathing felt tight this morning on my run. Sound a little wheezy to myself all day. May be time for another prednisone boost.

I did manage to be productive today - caught up on all my tumor board notes from the past and organized the ones of the future. Too bad I've now got tweedles on at night...

Who knows. So far, everything's been pretty damn good. Today had 3 cases, 2 majors, one of which was emergent. I'm feeling much better about the OR again.

Another Day
...closer to vacation.
Tana goes on vacation as of tonight, so I'm the lone clinical fellow. Which selfishly, I'm happy to be alone. It means I get the cases, I get the experiences, and I get to run the service my way.
Oct 19: Prospect Park 1 mile
Felt good. Even kicked it for the last 1/8 of the mile to really get the legs and heart going a little. Plus, I've started doing squats in the elevator on the way down. Usually get about 15 in.

Finally. I needed that.
But it was also a LONG OR day ~ didn't get home til 8:45. And never made it back to Downstate either. Guess I'm going in early again tomrorow...
Oct 18: To 11th and back
Remember this feeling: fried onion rings do not agree with you. Fried food in general does not agree with you. Back to healthy eating again tomorrow.

Sunny Sunday
I hate when I lose my posts.
I was supposed to go into the hospital this morning (or at least had planned to go this morning) to work on Tumor Board notes but alas, I didn't feel like it. The procrastination bug has bit again, and likely won't improve til after my vacation (you know, the one that I'm procrastinating planning?)
Oct 17: 1 mile run in Prospect Park
Off to shower and head to Manhattan! :)

Well, another set of days down. Today, I tooled around Brooklyn with my bro, sis-in-law and their dog Ella. Have to say, it was definitely fun but involved a great deal of walking. Tomorrow I have to do some work at work and then it's off to a Broadway show with Patricia and dinner with her and KPatz after. Wish this weekend didn't have to come to an end so soon...

The Panini Maker
Found that the George Forman Grill also makes a mean panini - made a mozzarella and chicken panini on the grill and it was yummy!
I've also realized I've hit my slump. I'm not motivated to do anything extra at work or after work. I'm in dire need of my vacation.

No, I didn't run 10 miles. I ran 1.0 miles, which is sorta like 10.

Got my freshdirect delivered this morning, which means I finally have food in the apartment. The apartment is fairly neat, but not overly so. Still have laundry to do. And taxes, due in 5 days. Oh, and a shitload of work related stuff.
And at any point, I'd like to stop coughing my lung out.

First Robot
No, not mine...Gorelick's. I've already played on the daVinci robot in a live person before. Today, though, Gorelick was the first gynecologist in Brooklyn to do a case on the robot. And I was asked to be his first assist (which made it quite fun indeed).
Oh, and last night (technically early this morning) Chris Page stopped by for his birthday. Which lead to some interrupted sleep on my part and a strong desire to go to bed early tonight, which has not yet occurred. Onto my runs.

Sore
So my body forgot what it was like to run 7 miles. Though today's run felt good, I just know I'm going to be sore.
Oct 3: Prospect Park 1 mile
Actually considered going longer, but then thought about the fact I ran 7 miles yesterday and then re-thought it and turned around. :)

Hamptons Half

Oct 2: Hamptons Half - 7 miles - ran 3 miles with Diana and 4 with LanNa
Yesterday was fun. Really enjoyed running with someone and cheering people on. It's been a long time since I've been to a race (and even longer since I've raced myself). So I guess now I need to look at the race calendar and figure out when I can do my next race.
Today, I still need to run. But it's only 4:30, so I still have time...

Three Months Down
Of fellowship, that is. This was just month 21 of running.
Sept 27: Up to 11th after work
Sept 28: Up to 16th and down around bank after work
Sept 29: Prospect Park at 6 pm after work
Sept 30: Up to 11th at 4 am after a long night of work related stuff
Tomorrow, if I make it through the day, I'm off for the weekend. I'm going to bed early tonight (like in 15 minutes early) and then probably do the same tomorrow. I can't wait to sleep...

Another One Bites the Dust
I guess it was just a matter of time before I bit it. You can't run on a trail, listen to music, and let your mind wander without one of those damn tree roots jumping up to get you.
Sept 26: Prospect Park 1 mile
So I took a tumble about 3/4 into my run. Scraped my right leg, palms of both hands, and maybe tweaked the right side of my neck. Nothing too bad, but maybe I'll stick to the streets from now on.

Lo-o-o-n-g Week
It's a good thing I ran in the morning on Wed. My flight got delayed with thunderstorms and I didn't get into NYC til 2 am.
Sept 23: Up to 11th then down to get pizza
Sept 24: Prospect Park 1 mile
Sept 25: Prospect Park 1 mile
I think I got a total of 10 hours of sleep in my bed this week. That was, until last night when I think I went to sleep around 9 and woke up this morning around 9. Finally feel a little rested. Hard to start my day though ~ putzed around for a bit, finally got my run in, and now am showering and heading to round. Should be done with that hopefully by 1 or 2 and then I've got to do some correcting and writing of abstracts. I'd like to say I'm looking forward to next weekend being off, but I think I'll be doing lots of work...

Happiest Place on Earth
I might actually need to go on a Disney vacation soon. I'm here in Florida, staying at the hotel before robot training today. I forgot what it's like to be around nice people who are happy. It's been almost half my lifetime since I've been to Disney (I think I was 16) and haven't really had a good reason to come back. Maybe while I'm in pursuit of happiness...

Crossing Midnight...Sorta,
This weekend was Lucas' Christening ~ and I finally became a godmother.
I left for PA early on Saturday and returned home late Sunday (almost 10 pm). I decided to go out and run, then finish my speech for tomorrow, then run again early Monday morning if I was still up so I could "sleep in" til 5 am tomorrow.
Sept 18: 2 miles with Leigh in PA - Lucas was in the stroller. It was actually fun and a whole lot easier than I thought to push a kid!
Sept 19: Up to 11th and back at 10 pm
Sept 20: Up to 16th and down, around bank and back at 1 am
So it was almost like crossing midnight.
Now I've got to wind down, sleep a little, look over my speech one more time, and head to the hospital. Definitely excited about tomorrow night though. Can't wait to see people again!

A Long Week
But a happy weekend off upcoming.
Sept 13: Up to 11th and back
Sept 14: Up to 16th and around the block
Sept 15: Over the bridge on the other side
Sept 16: Prospect Park at Dusk after the tornado
Sept 17: Up to 11th and back
The next few days are going to be busy - off to PA in the morning, then LI Monday night, Florida Tuesday night to Wednesday night. But I'm going to make the best of it because there are so many great things about it - hanging with Drew, Leigh and Scott this weekend, hanging with Michael on Monday and trying to make it fun in Florida.
But now, it's bedtime.

Fall is Here
At least, the weather outside is acting very fall-like.
Sept 12: Prospect Park 1 mile
Been up since 6:30 but still really puttering around the house, reading a lesiure book that is again making me contemplate my screwed up relationships. Gotta round, be productive at work and then do some reading. :)

September 11, 2010
It's a day that will always bring back memories of 2001, knowing exactly where you were and what you were doing. I remember being with my roommates after being told in lecture that the planes had hit. I remember watching TV and not knowing if we were going to war - but knowing full well that this was the defining event of my lifetime. People remember where they were when Kennedy got shot, when World War II started or ended...my generation will remember 9/11.

More Tired
I don't think I've ever gone on a run and come home more tired than when I started (versus more awake and slightly envigorated). That was, until tonight.
Sept 7: Up to 11th and back
Sept 8: Around the block to Prospect and 1/2 the loop
Sept 8: Up to 11th and back
And now, I have to put my cases to date in the SGO database. And then crash. Work tomorrow, all day, and then REALLY crash. But of course, I'm stuck on this weekend now...when I should have been on last weekend.
I think I need a vacation...

Labor Day
As I mentioned before, Labor Day work weekend got all kinds of screwed up. I was on call Sat night, Sun night, and today. Tana was on Friday night, rounded Sat and Sun. Which is really annoying and screwy. And totally killed my mojo for working all weekend. The beautiful weather played a role in that too, though.
Sept 5: Prospect Park 1 mile
Sept 6: Prospect Park 1 mile
Yesterday I tried ~ I really tried. After my run, went up to B&N, tried to put cases into the SGO database until it crashed. Then came down to the Park and tried to write my Candlelight Ceremony speech. Not much luck there. Wandered around for a bit, couldn't bring myself to actually do work in Connecticut Muffin. Went to the movies to see Eat, Pray, Love for inspiration. Not inspiring. Actually, not a great movie overall. Then came home, still uninspired, and read a leisure book.
Today, I got up, ran, went into work where I had to round and then do all the chemo orders for the week. Checked some labs, looked over some stuff, and then couldn't bear to be there any longer. Came home, played around on the laptop for a bit, made myself a smoothie and some popcorn, and now should do work.
Except I don't feel like it. So I guess I'm going to give myself til 5 pm and then head up to Connecticut Muffin where I will hopefully be more motivated than I am now.
Who wants to labor on Labor Day anyway?

What Hurricane?
So, Hurricane Earl was supposed to come in last night. Yesterday evening, the clouds were thick, dark, and looming. But it doesn't seem like anything happened because I woke up to a sunny beautiful day outside.
Sept 2: Prospect Park 1 mile
Sept 3: Prospect Park 1 mile
Sept 4: Prospect Park Lower Loop (1.75 miles)
So this was supposed to be my weekend on call. But yesterday, in some sort of crazy mess, it was determined that I had at least the night off. And then, when Tana called me a few minutes ago, I was told I didn't have to work til Monday.
Now, normally, this would be exciting. However, I have plans for the weekend of the 18th (Lucas' christening) and now this means that my next two weekends off are not weekends off at all, because I will have to work one of them. Never mind that I was mentally prepared to work these two weekends in a row to have two weekends off in a row. So now I'm covering Tana tonight because she made plans given this was supposed to be her weekend off and I'm taking call starting tomorrow afternoon. What a crazy fucked up mess.

I Like Passing People
It makes my run so much more fun when I can pass people. Especially people that appear to be going fast...and then I get to run by them. Sure, I get passed by some pretty wicked fast people, but I do a good amount of passing too. Course, that may be because I only run 1 mile.

Day 607
Guess I missed celebrating the 600th day. So day 607will have to do.
Almost done with August, which means almost 20 months of running at least a mile every day.
Aug 30: Prospect Park
Time: ~7:40
Seems no matter how I feel - fast or slow - I run somewhere around a 7:30-8 minute mile without trying. I guess that's good, but at some point I should try to go faster. Well, maybe not while it's still hot out.

Hot Again
Aug 29: Prospect Park 1 mile
Luckily, I ran before it got hot. Woke up at 7, putzed around on the computer til 8 then went out to run. Got home, pager and cell went off with an intraop consult for general surgery. Glad I ran early. Operated for a few hours, rounded, did chemo orders, worked on research database, came home famished, ate, went to Connecticut Muffin for more work on database and to read a few pages in my chemo handbook. All in all, a busy but productive day.
Weighed myself again today. 166. Then came home and went through my closet and got rid of all the pants that are way too big and all the underwear that doesn't fit either. Happy day!

It's a Beautiful Day
Today was perfect weather. Not that I spent much of it outside, but it is beautiful out with a bright blue sky and a few wispy white clouds. It's about 80 degrees and there's a little breeze.
Here's my runs for the last few days.
Aug 26: Prospect Park
Aug 27: Prospect Park
Aug 28: Prospect Park
Not so exciting. But I do love that run! Today I woke up a little late, took my time getting to the hospital (around 10:30), finished rounds (around 11:30), went shopping at Target and Victoria's Secret, got a pedicure and eyebrow/lip waxed, came home around 4 and went for my run. Since then, I've cleaned my apartment (mostly, there's still some papers to go through), showered, and am now waiting for Chris Page to get here. I think we're going to head down to Coney Island and see what the nightlife has to offer.
Tomorrow, I've made it my goal to be very productive. I'm going to run early, get to work by 9ish, round, do my chemo orders at both hospitals, figure out whatever other stuff has to be done, and work on my research a little bit. Hopefully I can get enough done to have everything set and waiting for the stats guy on our projects underway and then I can start doing my project. Then that'll be a few abstracts to submit with my name on them.

Dinner with the team. A run up and down the hill.
And the realization that I still have to dictate both cases. Ugh.

Seems the weather has taken a turn for the cold.
Aug 22: Prospect Park run before 8+ hours of research database crap
Aug 23: Prospect Park run after work
Aug 24: Prospect Park run after work (and before 6 pm!)
Today it's jeans and a sweatshirt kinda weather. Which actually makes me want to break out my new size 8 jeans (yes, that's right, size 8. I don't think I've been a size 8 since high school). So I think I'm going to do that and head up to Park Slope to do a little studying.
That is, if I can truly motivate myself to go...

Yesterday at work I weighed myself again. A few months ago, I mentioned I was down to 179 lbs. A few weeks ago, I weighed myself at work and was a little shocked to see I weighed 167. But that was confirmed yesterday - still 167 lbs. 32 lbs lighter than my heaviest weight in residency (198) and within 12 lbs of my lowest weight in college (155 lbs). Less than what I weighed when I was throwing (175ish). And I have to say, I'm pretty happy with this weight. I think I look good, I'm eating well (hence the weight loss) and I'm much more comfortable in my body and in my clothes. Well, the clothes that fit, that is. Most of my pants are too big. I've bought a bunch of skirts and dresses for work because of the weight loss. I'm going to have to go pants shopping for when it starts getting colder out. I guess there are worse things!

Bug in My Eye
I guess that's what happens when the sun starts setting earlier...
Tonight I ran in Prospect Park, as per usual, around 7:45. Was talking to Drew for a bit, which was nice, planning his trip home for our godchild's upcoming christening. Then I went on my run. At about the 3/4 mark, right into my left eye flew a bug. So I stopped, rubbed my eye (yes, I know I'm not supposed to do that, but whatever) and made my way to the water fountain to flush it out. Surprisingly, it wasn't that red when I got home.

Ups and Downs
The hill outside my apartment when I run.
Oh, and work.
Yesterday, I stayed late at work to accomplish some of the things that I feel make me a better doctor. And I felt good about it.
Today, I stayed late at work because I had to sign out. Not because I was actually able to accomplish anything productive.
Aug 12: Up to 11th and back down at around 10 pm.
Aug 13: Mile in Prospect Park.
I have to go to bed early. Maybe some sleep will change my perspective on things.

11 Days into August
Still running. Some days are better than others.
Some days I've gotten home really late and instead of running in the Park, ran up the hill to 16th and back down around the traffic circle or block. This morning, I even got up early (thanks to the phone call from the resident at 4:15) and ran in the morning ~ which I've been dying to try all summer just to get a tast of it so I can just veg after work. Usually doesn't work out, but it sure worked out today!
I promise I'll be better about posting my daily runs. But right now, I'm going to bed. One of the many benefits for getting my run in this morning.

19 Months Down
July 31: What else? Prospect Park Run.
Didn't sleep very well last night. Tossing and turning about a patient in the hospital. Between that and my chest cold which kept me up coughing and the amount of tea that I've drank which kept me up peeing, it wasn't a great night. But I did get my run in and now I'm going to shower and go round.
Then, hopefully accomplish some stuff in my office. And then go study. And tonight, when I come home, clean the apartment.
My life is rather boring.

One Month Down
Well, almost. I guess tomorrow is technically July 31, but this means that 1 month of fellowship is down. 2 years and 11 months to go. This was a rough week. Started out with an awesome weekend, but didn't involve much sleep, and then the beginning of the week hit hard with long days in the OR. Then, I got sick on Wednesday with the start of a chest cold. Now it's the same cold I get every 6 months or so (what I like to call my "SGO" sickness). Hacking cough, lots of mucous ~ I'm constantly amazed by the amount of mucous my body can produce. Soon, I'll lose my voice. It's a wonderful thing.
But I have managed to keep running. Well, one day was walking, but I consider 8+ miles worth it.
July 23: Prospect Park run before dinner with Patricia. Gotta enjoy my weekend off!
July 24: Prospect Park run before going into NYC to hang out with Nik and Kirthi.
July 25: RI with my dad - walked 8+ miles. I counted this today - usually don't count the walks with my dad when it's 3 miles, but I figured 8+ was good.
July 26: Up to 16th and back down around the traffiic circle. Got out of work after 9 pm.
July 27: Up to 16th and back down around the traffic circle. Got out of work after 10 pm.
July 28: Up to 16th and back down around the traffic circle. Starting a chest cold. Doesn't feel good.
July 29: Prospect Park - suprisingly felt ok, despite massive chest cold starting.
July 30: Prospect Park - slow and steady. This chest cold is killing me. (9:31)
Now it's bed early, run in the morning then round at the hospital and try to get organized. Going to do all the chemo orders and try to finally really understand chemotherapy doing and regimens. That, and hopefully get a table from IKEA. But first, I'm all about my bed.

Running Away
So today I tried to run away from some of the people occupying too much space in my head. Needless to say, because they are both still texting me tonight, it didn't work.
July 19: Prospect Park
July 20: Prospect Park
July 21: Prospect Park
July 22: Prospect Park
Oh, what to do...
m "nope, dying here."
e "well, you're not allowed to die quite yet...i'm not done with you quite yet."
....
e "i currently want to shoot myself"
m "don't do that. i'm not done with you yet. lol."
e "dude, you're a bunch of trouble."

Another Morning Run
This is the second day I had the opportunity to sleep in a little. Slept from 10:30 til about 7:30 and finally got out of bed around 8. Then I peetered around for a half hour til I got a text from Tana saying "let's round at 9:15" which meant I had to get my butt in gear if I was going to get my run in before rounds.
July 18: Prospect Park 1 mile
Time: ~ 8 minutes (didn't actually time it, just glanced at my watch)
Then we rounded and now I'm home. Ordered freshdirect for delivery tomorrow night to have some fresh veggies in the house and am currently doing my laundry. Once that's all put away, I'll probably go hit up a coffeeshop up in Park Slope to try to do some work. Cause if I stay home, I'm gonna fall asleep.

Morning Run
Ahh...
Last night was a good night of sleep. Michelle, my second year, was on call, so I was able to sleep really well. Today, Sarah, my third year is on call, so I'm also going to sleep well. Had one admission today, but it happened during the day. Managed to get my run in early (or late, depending on how you look at it). Slept til 8, ran when I woke up, was in the hospital by 9:30ish.
July 17: Prospect Park 1 mile
Feeling: Took it easy.
Then, after rounds, I did some studying at some coffeeshops. After the admission, I came home and tidied my still mostly-unpacked apartment. I didn't really unpack anymore, but now it currently doesn't look like a tornado hit it. And the dirt from my running shoes is all swept up.

Ugh. What a Day.
July 14: Prospect Park after being up for essentially 36 hours
July 15: Prospect Park - felt good after a good night's rest the night before
July 16: Prospect Park - felt eh. Tired today.
Today was the long day ~ the day you run around like an idiot because you don't know the system, you're all alone, and you're trying to be good at your job. My second year resident got pulled to the OR, my third year was in clinic, my second year fellow was at a conference, and my third year fellow, while available, is sometimes sorta an ass. But I got it done, it took longer than it might have needed to, but it all got done. And I think the patients, for the most part, were happy.
Tomorrow I get to round by myself. WOOHOO! Round, write chemo orders, and then find a cozy place to get some work done. Or maybe clean my apartment. We'll see how the day goes.

Just Another Week
July 7: Prospect Park after work
July 8: Prospect Park after work
July 9: Prospect Park in the evening, before heading back to the hospital to do a case
July 10: Prospect Park in the evening
July 11: Prospect Park in the morning before visiting Katrina
July 12: Prospect Park after work
July 13: Prospect Park after work
Do you get my theme? The marked mile (or half-mile out and half-mile back) in Prospect Park has become easily my favorite run.
I've timed it a few days and I'm running between 7:30 and 8 minutes. I'm not running all out, I'm not running slow, it's just a solid pace. Comfortable. Which makes me think about how I used to run 12 minute miles when I started this and how getting 7+ minute miles was exciting for me. Now it's routine. Time to start working to breaking 7 regularly. Or upping the milage.

ICK
99 degrees at 8 pm for my run?
Ick.
July 6: It was slow (10 minute mile). It was disgusting out.
And there looks to be no end in sight.

Happy 4th of July!
So guess what I did today?
Rounded. You're going to sense a running theme with work over the next three years.
It was freakin' hot out! Like 93 degrees hot. I'm still sweltering in my apartment (because I don't like to turn the air conditioning on until I'm about to go to bed. And I'm watching the fireworks, which is pretty cool that I don't have to go anywhere for them.
Oh, and I ran. I waited til about 8 pm and took it easy (like 9:20 mile easy).
July 4: Prospect Park 1 mile
And now, I'm going to bed. Cause I've got to round in the morning tomorrow again.

It's Getting HOT!
So the weather outside is hot, hot, hot. Beautiful blue skies. So what did I do today?
Rounded at the hospital - 4 1/2 hours.
Waited for freshdirect - 2 hours
Tried to unpack my apartment - 4 hours (2 of the hours waiting for freshdirect)
What else, you ask? Run, of course.
July 3: Prospect Park (7:51) - pickups between the poles
Haven't felt "fabulous" to want to do a run to break 7 minutes lately. And I'm going to guess that I might not, given the fact that the entire weekend is supposed to be like this. So I run between 7 and 8 pm and just "get it done."

The Start of Fellowship
So far, not too bad.
Jun 29: Prospect Park, nice and easy, after spending the day at Downstate
Jun 30: Prospect Park (8:09) after returning to the City from my dad's cards appt
July 1: Prospect Park (7:31) after the first day of fellowship!
July 2: Prospect Park (7:50) - did some pickups between the poles
So I've started fellowship. Wow. Have to learn a bunch of new particulars with what these attendings want. But I'm hoping that it will be a ton of fun. And learning.
And in 1093 days, it's done.

Oh Holy Hell...
I haven't updated this in almost a month. The last post was right before my last OR day with Pearl. Talk about what feels like a long time ago...
I have run every day. I've been in Nicaragua for two weeks, where yesterday I ran my mile in the airport in flip flops. But ran a mile nonetheless. I ran in the mountains of Jalapa and on the roads of San Juan del Sur. I ran in Managua at our hotel the first few nights. But I kept running. And I'll keep running.
And maybe at some point, I'll detail all this running.

Where'd the Time Go?
How is it already the second week of June???
May 30: Ran around apartment complex pre-call
May 31: Ran around apartment complex post-call
June 1: Ran around apartment complex pre-call
June 2: Ran around apartment complex post-call
June 3: Ran in Brooklyn after getting back into my apartment
June 4: Ran around the parking garage pre-operating/partying
June 5: Ran prior to Beth's wedding
June 6: Ran prior to call around the apartment complex - and MOVED OUT
June 7: Ran in Prospect Park after onc clinic and being up some rediculous number of hours
And here we are. Approaching June 8. My last day operating with Pearl. Again.
I think I'll run in the morning.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Sometimes you have to go backwards in life to go forwards.

Prospect Park
I remember when I first moved to NYC and ran in Central Park ~ I came home and posted on AIM that I just fell in love with NYC by running through Central Park.
I feel the same way about Prospect Park ~ the park in my backyard, on a slightly smaller scale than Central Park.
I don't know Prospect as well as I know Central ~ I know Central Park has those West Side Hills that trick me every time. No, not the Great Hill ~ the rolling hills that happen on the lower West Side of the Park. Prospect Park doesn't really have rolling hills. It has one continuous hill from the far side of the Park up to Grand Army Plaza and just when you think it's done, it keeps going up the Park Slope Side. It only starts to go downhill about a mile before I get home. I think it's pretty much a mile and a quarter uphill, a mile downhill and a mile that's flat. The loop itself if 3.35 miles. And I ran-walked-ran that today.
May 29: 1 loop of Prospect Park
Time: Didn't time it
Songs: In my Head, Love Drug, Fireflies, Just Dance...and a bunch of others. It was a good mix today.
Feeling: The duration of the hill took me by surprise. But otherwise, felt great!
I'll be a little more prepared for the park in the future. And I'm sure I'll become quite familiar with it, since it'll be my daily run!

Not on L&D Today
May 14: Around the apartment (S route)
Feeling: Ok - really picked it up at the end, and that felt okay
Today was an OR morning and a clinic afternoon, to which I tried to figure out how to book all the cases that I want to do before I'm done. It's really a pain in the butt, but I want the opportunity to operate. And to operate with the residents. This is my last chance to make my own decisions before I go back to being a fellow and having to run them by people again.
Tomorrow's another 24 hours on L&D. $4250 this week alone, and that's provided I don't get called in on Sunday...the money is all going to the bank! :)

Finally made it to Brooklyn and found my place to live. Right across the street from Prospect Park, where I can't wait to run every day! And I'm so excited about finally getting back into my own place and getting started in fellowship. As much fun as I'm having being back at the 'Brook, I'm ready to move forward and start my career. And then come back in 3 years.

Starting Month 17
Wow.
16 months of running every day. 121 days of running everyday this year, plus 365 last year. Feels good.
Today's going to be HOT. And I'm going to go out to the outlets, wander around and shop. I'm long overdue and I don't have any summer clothes! Especially not summer clothes that fit me with my weight loss. 177 lbs last week at the gym. Been a little short on fruits this last week, so it's time to pick it up again.
April 30: Around the apartment complex (windy route)
May 1: Around the apartment complex (normal route)
Bring on the sun!

Three More Days
April 27: Run around the Apartment pre-call (ie 5:30 am)
April 28: Run around the Apartment post-call, post-nap, pre-Journal Club
April 29: Run around the Apartment after work
So I'm spending lots of time on L&D again. And so far, so good. Let's see what happens over the next few days and weeks to see if I want to shoot myself about it.
Yesterday I did the resident lecture, which I think was well received. Then I hosted Journal Club, which I also think was well received. I thanked the residents for accepting me coming back. I really appreciated the way they've been so willing to let me teach them. And I hope they've learned something. We even got a few attendings out - Eva, Lydic, Pearl and Ann stopped by, which I also think was nice. Harvards was a good place to host it and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Soon though, it's time to start focusing on me again. 2 months til fellowship!

Another Week Down
Almost 16 months of daily running.
April 20: Ran around apartment complex after work
April 21: Ran around apartment complex
April 22: Ran around apartment complex before office hours
April 23: Ran on the ferry after my reverse 24h (call-L&D) - upper deck
April 24: Ran on the ferry after my CT visit - car deck
April 25: Ran around apartment complex pre-call
April 26: Ran at Bally's after working out with Tristan
Time: 7:22 (36.6, 36.7, 39.9, 37.6, 37, 37, 36.9, 36.9 37.1, 39.7, 34.5, 32.1)
Feeling: I know I can go faster out front given what my later two laps were. Guess it's something to keep working on...
And I love working out with Tristan. And today, weighed in at 177 lbs. Down two more. :) Would love to get to 169 or so...or ever better, 156, my senior year of college weight!

Gymin' It Post-Call
Out with Jen, Jacqui, Katie and Kev Saturday night.
24 hour call Sunday - Monday.
Postpartum Rounds Post-Call.
Catching up with Tara Porte Post-Rounds.
Breakfast with Donna and Kylie at Toast.
Gym with Tristan.
Pre-workout I ran my mile at Bally's.
April 19: 12 Laps of Bally's Track
Feeling: Ok ~ realized I had a higher gear when I was easily sprinting at the end.
Time: 7:31
And then lots of gym for abs and other stuff. Feel good.
However, when I got home, I found out my roommate ate my pasta that I was looking forward to making when I came home. Grrrrr. Now that I had set my mood for pasta, the granola bar I just ate didn't really satisfy me. May have to take a nap and then head to Oilve Garden. But definitely nap first.

Oh, Sleep...
So yesterday I learned that you should listen to the traffic reports on the radio. Even though they recommended taking the Whitestone Bridge home, I thought I could sneak by on the Throgs Neck. Yeah, not so much. Killed at least an hour of my life on that bridge yesterday, driving home from a get together of Jen, Kev, Jacqui and Katie for dinner to celebrate Jac's 30th birthday and Katie's pregnancy. So great to see them all. I love my sister-in-law and all her friends and I do think this will end up bringing my brother and I closer together just because we end up spending more time together. He picked himself a great girl.
So I got home around 1:30 and maybe was asleep by 2 am. Which means I didn't really like my alarm clock at 5:45, but up I went to run before my 24h call.
April 18: Around the apartment complex
Feeling: Not half bad for being only half awake
At least I already finished postpartum rounds today. Here's for hoping this is a good day. I've got good people on, so it should be fine. Hopefully.

Heading to CT
Although this time, it's not to visit Dad. Going out tonight in New Haven to celebrate Jacqui's birthday.
I've decided that life's too short. If people are going out and I love them, I'm going. If I can live without them, then I can go home and sleep. Jacqui's become a great friend, I love my sister-in-law who invited me and will be out tonight, so I'm going. This is what's important in life and that's what I've learned. I've also learned that I do love my work and I do love to teach and I am very happy with my career path ~ though I wish I could start today as the gyn onc and not in 3 years. And I've also realized that I haven't really seriously dated anyone in the last 10 years. Lots of friends-with-benefits, a few short relationships, but nothing serious. And I've also realized that I'm actually okay with that. It's an interesting realization.
So anyhow, enough philosophy. About my run.
April 17: Around the apartment complex
Feeling: Still loving my new songs on my ipod
After my run, got a coffee and a banana. And now I'm off to shower, head to Port Jeff for some shopping, and then the ferry to CT. I can sleep when I'm dead.

6 Hours of Sleep
Call last night was great...I got 6 hours of sleep, which left me functional enough to do my cases and office hours. Then dinner with LanNa and now I'm home. Watching Gossip Girl currently. But of course, I did my run.
April 16: Around the apartment complex
Feeling: Good - new songs on my ipod (that was what I accomplished yesterday morning)
Then I danced around my room for a few songs. Feels good.

Running at Work
So today started with rounds in the morning at 6:30 with the gyn team. Then to my office where I've accomplished nothing this morning, except talking to Conway and agreeing to take her call tonight for cash. Which meant I had to run here at Stony Brook.
April 15: Out Level 2 HSC, up the hill, almost to the traffic light on Nicolls, up the grassy hill, around the Cancer Center, down to the Hospital parking lot and in on Level 4.
Distance: ~ 1.15 miles
Clothes: Scrub bottoms, long sleeve NJ marathon t-shirt, adidas shoes that now stay in my car
Feeling: Sun's warm, day's nice, it's a fun thing!
Paid my taxes today...ugh.

Tight Hamstrings
And neck. And back. And shoulders. And legs in general.
Abs aren't too bad. Probably need to work them harder this week.
Today I decided to skip out of Suffolk County Clinic Day and try to run my errands. Don't have clinic hours until 2 pm. Got to get eyebrows and lip waxed, new pedicure and figure out my taxes. Then happy hour tonight with Heather.
April 14: Around the apartment complex
Just about done sweating and time to get in the shower.

179
...pounds, that is. First time I've been under 180 probably since college.
April 11: Around Apartment before work
April 12: Ran outside at Bally's
April 13: Around Apartment after work
So I'm feeling pretty good about this weight thing. I'd like to get to 170-175 - that would be my senior year in college weight during the season. Pre-season, I was 155, and as much as I'd love to get down there, I doubt I could.
Go me!

Day 100 - this year
So that's day 465 for me.
April 10: Laid around for a lot of the day watching tv and wasting the day. God knows I need some vegging. Then ran around the apartment complex before driving to CT for Terry's birthday.
Gotta run eary given that I'm on call tomorrow for 24 hours.

A Little More Work...
A lot more fun.
So I nominated Michael for the Aesculapius Award, one of the prestigious teaching awards at the hospital. He's been nominated three times before, but in this case, the fourth time was the charm. When I got the email yesterday, I ran over to the Cancer Center to tell him. He smiled, turned red, gave me a hug and thanked me. Made me feel good, because it's not often the mentee gets to do something for the mentor.
Yesterday, I did a D&C hysteroscopy and an ectopic. Today I did 2 C/S on L&D before going to continuity clinic. All in all, I've had some good days.
April 7: Around the Apartment Complex (had intentions of doing this on the ferry, but I missed itby a minute and a half...)
April 8: Around the Apartment Complex
April 9: Around the Apartment Complex
A couple of more days down. Loving that I'm still running. Always leaves me with a smile on my face.
Of course, being called incredible also leaves a smile on my face. :)

Back and Forth
Connecticut to New York to Connecticut to New York....
I'm getting a little tired. I was here this weekend from Saturday AM to Sunday PM. Then it was a drive back to NY Sunday night to work on L&D on Monday only to turn around and drive back after work and the gym.
April 3: Lima St Run
April 4: Lima St Run
April 5: Running on the treadmill after kettlebells with Tristan
April 6: Lima St Run
Today was dad's post-op echo. EF is now 40% which is nothing short of amazing. So all in all, today was a pretty good day.

Back in the Main
OR that is. Back at the 'Brook...
Did a TAH/BSO today with Joe and Jim. Good case, tough, but fun. God, I love operating. Then came continuity clinic, then dinner with LanNa. Then, of course, out to run.
April 2: Around the apartment complex
Song: Let's Get it Started
Feeling: Good song, good run.
On that note, I'm going to bed. Getting up early, rounding at the hospital and then heading to CT for the weekend. Think I'm bringing laundry home again...

Starting Month 16
Happy April!
So I survived my 33+ hour call. 6 c-sections, 6 NSVDs, a couple of interesting consults. Then I came home, ran, and slept until Journal Club. Then I drank and came home and slept more.
March 31: Around the apartment complex
April 1: Around the apartment complex - 1 1/2 times
Tomorrow I get to operate in the Main OR tomorrow. Very happy about this. :)

Torrential Rain and Wind
makes for a not fun run in the morning.
On 24 today, which meant get up and run pre-call at 5:30. Not that I slept much, because the wind battered the rain against my window every 5-10 minutes, waking me up.
March 30: Around the apartment complex
Feeling: Wet. Cold. Wet.
Ok, shower and start my day.

Just a Little Rain
...or maybe 2-5 inches. Whatever.
I had planned to run inside at the gym. But my schedule got changed again and instead, I covered L&D this afternoon. So I had to run when I came home.
March 29: Around the Apartment Complex
Weather: Raining.
Feeling: Alright...except when I stepped in puddles.
Then, for the first time in the over a month of living in this apartment, I cooked myself dinner. Just made some pasta, but still, the first time I cooked. Not that it'll happen anytime soon - on call tomorrow, Wed is Journal Club...
Oh, on call tomorrow. Gotta get up to run. Time to go to bed then.

Lazy Sunday
Today, I decided not to go back to CT. Figured I'll be there this coming weekend for Easter and then after that for the doctor's appts and Terry's birthday so I might as well take a day to myself. And though there are things I should be doing (like taxes, bills, IRB) I've decided to do nothing. Well, I'm having dinner with Chris. But that's still nothing. I've gotta eat, right?
March 27: Around the apartment complex post call
March 28: Around the apartment complex mid afternoon when I finally got out of bed
Feeling: Did some pickups. Felt ok. Not great, not horrible.
I am enjoying my day. Surfing the net, picked up Cosmopolitan magazine to read, just laying around. Tomorrow I'll be academic and get the rest of the stuff done. Today is about me.
And that could be because of my horoscope today..."Oh boy, here we go. That innocent little flirtation you were starting to enjoy? Forget about enjoying it. A certain someone who absolutely adores you will make it abundantly clear that this isn't what they quite had in mind when you two talked about it. Of course, you're a big fan of monogamy, so it's not like you were thinking about acting on this - but fun is fun. At least, it was..."
Hmmm...maybe it's best I haven't said what I was planning on. More food for thought.

My 200th Post
Just thought that was a neat little stat. It's also my 450th day running a mile every day.
Last night was a night out with the AICU nurses, a few surgery residents, and the urology crew. Heather and I spent the night sending texts to Michael to try to get him to come out...and then she's surprised in the morning when he texts her back! I'm a little worried about what might happen if the three of us do get drunk together....
March 26: Around the apartment complex
Feeling: Surprising well given the amount I drank last night.
Ahh....life is good.

Ahhh, sleep...
Yesterday, post call, I finally got a great deal of sleep. I've been overdue for that for the last week.
March 23: Precall - around the apartment complex
March 24: Post call, post gym - around the apartment complex
Then I went to bed around 4:30 pm and did not get out of bed until 8:30 this morning.
That was wonderful.
March 25: Around the apartment complex, pre-continuity clinic
Now I'm off to get some food and some coffee and then go to the office for the afternoon. There's a happy hour tonight at Tara's with some of the OR crew, so I'll head over there afterwards.

Another Week
Another week (or at least 5 days) down.
March 18: Around the Apartment Complex late at night after Vanessa's
March 19: Around the Apartment Complex early in the morning pre-call
March 20: Lima St Run post-call
March 21: Lima St Run on my parents 40th anniversary
March 22: Around the Apartment Complex after academic day
So, since my friend Kristen has started streaking this year, and she says that today is day 81. Which makes it day 446 for me.
I got the Spring Edition of the USRSA in the mail at my parents this weekend. Seems I'm #232 on the Active Streak Registry. Today, someone asked when I thought I'd stop running. My answer was "when I can't anymore."
I don't see that happening any time soon.
Time for bed. Will be up early tomorrow to run pre-call.

I have no comment about what happened last night.
Actually, I have lots of comments, this just isn't the place to post it.
Suffice it to say, I did my run this morning after a bottle of wine and about a half-hour of sleep.
March 17: Treadmill run
Time: Didn't even look
Distance: 1.04 miles
Again, wow. I still have to digest all of this...

Another SGO Down
Well, I'm done with the conference. I leave tomorrow at 9 am, so no sessions for me.
Didn't want to run in the morning when I was a little more congested, so I ran after sessions at 5:30.
March 16: Around SF
Distance: 1.25 miles or more
Feeling: Pretty good, despite the hacking I do in my hotel room.
Alright, time to shower and meet up with MP for some drinking.

California Dreaming
SGO.
Last year, I was "on display" at this conference. This year, I get to be just who I am.
March 13: Ran around outside by the hotel (1.25 miles)
March 14: Ran around outside by the hotel (1.25 miles)
March 15: Ran on the treadmill (8:03 running, another 1:30 walking for cool down)
Still have a knot in my left calf from the cramp I got after the flight. Also have no voice, which is similar to last year at SGO. Guess that means I just get to listen.
Have got to hang out with Drew every night so far, which has been wonderful. Just the simple pleasure of my best friend. :)

Starting back at the Brook
It's funny - I've had a number of people come up to me and ask "who's this new attending Stevens?" To which I've replied "me!"
I'll admit, I'm having more fun at the Brook than I expected to. So far, been to the main OR 5 times and done 2 hysts on L&D. I'll say my surgical skills will be kept sharp.
And I have been running ~ though I may not be able to exactly tell you when/where. Let me get the calendar and give it a shot.
Feb 20: CT run
Feb 21: CT run
Feb 22: Ran at Bally's - 12 laps - under 8 minutes
Feb 23: Ran 1 1/2 loops of apartment complex prior to call
Feb 24: Ran 1 1/2 loops of apartment complex prior to crashing around 9 pm
Feb 25: Ran apt complex
Feb 26: Back in CT, around the block there
Feb 27: CT run - then drove to NY at night
Feb 28: Ran apt complex prior to call
March 1: Ran apt complex after workout with Tristan (it was nice out)
March 2: CT run - Dad's doctors appts
March 3: CT run
March 4: CT run then back to NY
March 5: Ran after work - almost forgot because Nik was in labor!
March 6: Ran in the morning then traveled to NJ
March 7: Ran apt complex before call
March 8: Ran at Ballys before workout with Tristan- 7:28
March 9: Ran on the Ferry on the way back to CT
March 10: CT run after walking 3 miles with dad
March 11: Ran apt complex after continuity clinic
March 12: Ran apt complex before running errands
YToday I leave for SGO. So my next few runs will be in SF.

Whirlwind Trip
Wow. I'm tired.
Yesterday, I left Meriden at around 4:30 am. I arrived at JFK around 6:45 and started my journey to Montana. I landed (Montana time) at 12:30 and then started my drive to Miles City. I arrived back at my apartment around 3 and found the following:
- Running Clothes strewn over the floor
- 3 Petrified bananas on the counter
- That I had accumulated a lot more stuff that I thought.
So what did I do to clear my mind? My run.
Feb 18: Around the block, counterclockwise
Let the packing begin. I did go to Rib and Chop with Jackie and Lisa, finally giving them their Christmas presents. I stopped by the hospital and packed up my office. And then I was up until around 1 am packing my apartment. Got a few hours of sleep and then again, started my day with a run.
Feb 19: Around the block, counterclockwise.
Then it was off to the office, Midrivers, St Vincent's Thrift Store and then the airport - which I arrived essentially just in the nick of time. And now, I'm sitting in the Minneapolis airport. I'll land at JFK around 11 pm and then start the journey home to CT.
And then, I start back at Stony Brook on Tuesday.
A little bit of a whirlwind.

And Tomorrow, Montana
Feb 17: Oak St Run
Feeling: Ok. My dad thought I just ran around the house since I was back so quickly. My left calf is going to cramp soon, I can just feel it.
Dad was cleared by the CT surgeon today. Can start to drive when he feels up to it and can start to lift more than 10 lbs in 2 weeks. His arterial scan was negative, which means his calf stuff is probably neurologic and not athrosclerosis, which is good.
Tomorrow I fly to Montana, pack up all my shit, and come home. Literally. Home to the 'Brook.
Who would have thought...

Snowing in CT
Feb 14: Lima Run
Feb 15: Lima Run
Last night, they predicted 1-3 inches of snow. There were 4-5 inches this morning and then it stopped. So I shoveled. Except at 1 pm it started snowing again - at about 1-2 inches AN HOUR. I shoveled again at 3 pm another 3 inches and now, it doesn't even look like I shoveled. I'm not going out again tonight. I'll just deal with it in the morning.
Feb 16: Oak St Run
Weather: 33 degrees, snowing about 1-2 inches an hour
Feeling: I love running in the snow - but I wasn't going to try Lima in the snow!
Tomorrow, my dad has an arterial scan in the morning and then follow up with the CT surgeon. Fun fun. And I finished my orientation stuff for SB today, so provided all goes well, I'll be an attending on Monday!

A Long Month
It's been almost exactly a month since I posted. And what a long month it has been. Let me try to recap it by remembering all the runs I've done.
Jan 15: Flew home - ran that morning. See my last post.
Jan 16: Went to the hospital, saw dad, went to Jen & Kev's for the night and ran, albiet very reluctantly, at 9 pm around their neighborhood.
Jan 17: Ran at my parents house - Elm to Harrison to Oak to Silver to Elm
Jan 18: Same
Jan 19: Same
Jan 20: Same - think this is the day I started running Lima instead of Silver
Jan 21: Same
Jan 22: Dad had open heart surgery. CABG x 5, MVR. Ran that night at the hotel at the hospital. Ran in the hallway up and down 6 laps (12 lengths) ~ 10 minutes
Jan 23: Hotel run - same
Jan 24: Hotel run - same
Jan 25: Hotel run - same
Jan 26: Ran at my parents house - Lima route
Jan 27: Same
Jan 28: Same
Jan 29: Same
Jan 30: Same
Jan 31: Same
Feb 1-11: Same
(Feb 3: Dad came home from the hospital)
Feb 12: Ran on the Ferry boat coming back from LI for 10 minutes
Feb 13: Ran at my parents house - Lima route
And shortly, I'll head out to run the Lima route again. It's been a long month, as I said, and some interesting things have happened.
One - I've been running for 13 1/2 months
Two - My friend Kristen started doing the same thing
Three - I'm not going back to Montana. Well, I am, but just for long enough to get my stuff.
Four - I'm going to start as an attending at Stony Brook.
Five - We redid my parents living room and cleaned the downstairs. So I actually can breathe here again.
Six - Going to walk with dad.

Goin' Home
Wasn't planning on heading back east this soon, but sometimes things are out of your control.
My dad got admitted to the hospital with uncompensated CHF. They think he had an inferior MI a few weeks ago and that's his "hidden pneumonia" - except not so much pneumonia.
Either way, I bought a ticket yesterday to fly home. Thank god for being an attending.
And that meant run this morning 'cause I won't be anywhere until tomorrow at 10 am when I land at Bradley.
Jan 15: Around the block counterclockwise
Weather: Not too bad
Feeling: mixed emotions
Today may try me in the office - I don't know if I really want to talk to patients right now...

It's a Non-OR Day Kinda Day
Today's Thursday ~ that's supposed to be my OR day.
Except I don't have any cases today.
Which means I slept in (8:30 am), screwed around doing nothing (10 am), and went out for my run (10:15 am), and have now showered.
Jan 14: Around the block counterclockwise
Weather: 23 degrees, partly cloudy.
So now, I'm going to the office to tackle the charts. If I can get them all done, I don't need to come in this weekend. And I'd be caught up. Wouldn't be a bad thing!

Running in Circles
Jan 11: Around the block counterclockwise
Ran after volleyball - and we won
Jan 12: Around the block counterclockwise
Ran after dinner with Peter
Jan 13: Around the block counterclockwise
Ran after work - weather was supposed to be as high as 50 today but it was probably only about 40 when I finally got out to run.
Tomorrow, I have no patients so I'll be in the office all day doing charts. But that may prevent me from having to go in this weekend, which would be FABULOUS. We'll see how much I can accomplish.

I'm a Member!
So I got my USRSA membership package today. Sorta forstalled my run for a few minutes as I opened it up and started to flip through. About halfway through the package I came across my welcome letter from John Strumsky, the President of the Association. He wrote:
"Two of my most memorable runs in Montana occurred in Miles City and Billings. I remember running the perimeter of Riverside Park in Miles City and then cutting over to the country club..."
That's exactly where I run! Put a smile on my face. There is another member list of running in every state. I should work on that a little while I'm out here.
Jan 10: Around the block clockwise
Weather: 28 degrees, sunny and warm
Clothes: too many layers!
Ok, now I really have to go to the office today. I'm going to shower now and get started. At least I'm starting with a smile on my face!

Thirty Degrees of Separation
In 3 days. What?
Jan 7: Around the block counterclockwise
Weather: -9 degrees, feels like -26
Time: 4:30 PM
Jan 8: Around the block counterclockwise
Weather: -6 degrees, feels like -19
Time: 7:00 PM
Jan 9: Golf Course
Weather: 21 degrees, sunny, feels like 13
Time: 3:00 PM
Never made it to work today to do charts. I've got about 60 in the office, which means I've got about 10 hours at least of work to do if I'm able to work straight through. It means that I'm going to finally have to buckle down and do it. Going to get up early, not turn on the TV and just head straight to work. I did enjoy my day today. I hope that I can get another day without a call...

F-R-E-E-Z-I-N-G
Dear God,
Please turn up the heat. Thanks.
Erin
Jan 4: Around the block clockwise
Weather: 14 degrees, feels like 3 degrees
Jan 5: Around the block clockwise, after volleyball
Weather: 1 degree, feels like -12 degrees
Jan 6: Around the block counterclockwise
Weather: -7 degrees, feels like -22 degrees
Tonight was so cold that when I went came in, my eyelashes were white. I could feel them freezing shut. That's a really creepy feeling.
And I think tomorrow's supposed to be colder. Great.
Please turn up the heat. Thanks.

Just Another Day
Jan 3: Around the block clockwise
Weather: 14 degrees, cloudy, feels like 14
Songs: Brian Wilson, Panic at the Disco
Clothes: 2 layers top and bottom plus vest
Feeling: Better than expected...
Love watching Sunday morning TV, really don't want to go to the office. But I'm going to get it done today that way I can start out January on the right foot.

Keep Running and Running...
Jan 2: Around the block counterclockwise
Weather: 28 degrees, cloudy, feels like 23 degrees
Clothing: 2 layers shirt, TNT vest, 2 layers pants
Had hours at Public Health this morning. Then Lindsay and I went to the Airport Inn for lunch and then I came home and took a nap. Now I've got to work on my STD presentation for Friday to the middle school kids. Tomorrow, it's off to the office to get through all the stacks of charts that I've collected over the last month. UGH.

Happy 2010!
Well, it's a new year.
And it started pretty much the same way last year did. Took a good long nap after rounding at the hospital. And then went out on a mile run.
Jan 1, 2010: Around the block, counterclockwise
Weather: 11 degrees, light snow, feels like -4
And as I started my mile run, I put my application for the USRSA in the mailbox. I'm a streak runner!
