Today's Run

Another beautiful day...and after all the sleeping, I felt much better. As did my shins, which I thought were going to explode yesterday.

May 31: College Rd to Mooney Pond to S. Evergreen to Sunset, around the church. Then I stopped to watch the softball game for a little bit and then came home.

5 months down, 7 to go.
15 work days of residency left. 3 clinic, 11 L&D, 1 RRD.

If only I had a job...

The Week Before

Tues May 26: Ferndale run after the gym with Tristan.
Wed May 27: Apartment complex - after dinner at Paces when I was very very full and drunk.
Thurs May 28: Apartment complex running.
Fri May 29: Ferndale run, really early in the morning. Then overnight call-trip to CT-and back.
Sat May 30: Apartment complex loop and Church parking lot loop after being up 40 hours.

And now it's Sunday and I just woke up. It's overcast but looks somewhat sunny. I'll go out in a bit.

5 months of running every single day. Almost halfway there.

Memorial Day Weekend

Wed May 20: Ran after journal club while I was drunk. Around the apartment complex.
Thurs May 21: Ran in the morning...and was a little hung over from journal club. Galaxie run.
Fri May 22: Ran at night because I couldn't wake up in the morning. Around the apartment complex.
Sat May 23: Ran in the morning because I was on call for 24 hours. Ferndale Run.
Sun May 24: Ran at night because I slept all day. Around the apartment complex.
Mon May 25: Ran during the day because I had it off. :) Ferndale run.

Basically, I'm still running every day. Found a new route that's a mile - start down Galaxie, but turn onto Ferndale, then up Sunset behind the church back to home. Depending on how I run around the church, it's either exactly a mile or up to 1.2 miles. In the dark, I still run in circles around the apartment. But I like my daytime jaunts. I really should start running farther than a mile, but there's just some days where it's all I can do to even get out there.

I can't believe it's already Memorial Day Weekend ~ or that it's almost over! Three weeks and 4 days and I'll be done with residency. I guess it's time for me to really start studying for the boards.

139 days down...

226 to go!

May 18: W of apartment complex
May 19: Loop of apartment, L of church

Dana and I discussed today how there's some days/nights we "just don't want to run."

I'm just glad that once I start, I'm good.

That's more than a 1/3 of the way there!

It's the Weekend!

So yesterday, I didn't get out of bed until noon. And I really didn't do anything until 3, at which point I got food. And then gym'ed it with Tristan. When I came home, I ran.

May 16: College to Galaxie to Ferndale to Evergreen to Sunset, behind the church and back to College Rd then the apartment
Distance: 1.1 miles

Today, I'm going to the movies with Loren. After, I'm thinking of starting my studying. So I decided to run before the movies.

May 17: College to Galaxie with some fartleks
Run: Ran down College Rd and when I got onto Galaxie, I did sprints between the telephone poles until I got back to College and then finished at a medium pace
Weather: 50 degrees, very very light drizzle

So yesterday during my workout with Tristan (my first in two weeks) I realized that other than running, I'm not doing much secondary stuff on my own, including, but not limited to, abs, upper body, strength workouts. I've got some work to do. We're going to have to make up workouts for me, since I've only got another month and a half here on LI.

Nap then Run

So every night this week was a nap and then a run...and some drinking pre-run.

May 13: Harvards then W around apartment complex (nice out)
May 14: Chilis with Nikole and Kirthi to celebrate my first onc interview and then W around apartment complex (raining)
May 15: 1 1/2 loops of apartment complex (nice out)

I have a horrible pounding headache. Was supposed to go to the Hootenanny, but feel like crap. I think I'm going back to bed.

Always More Awake

After my run.

So yesterday, I ran before work. Today, I ran after work. Both days, I did the Galaxie run.

Don't have too much to say tonight. Gonna watch the Biggest Loser and see who wins.

...and the Tree Pollen is High Today

You'd think that I forgot after just being away for a week. The wonders of the tropical island was that I was breathing fine on all my runs. Despite the fact that they were uphill and I might have been "out of breath," I wasn't wheezing. But today, well, that's a different story. I woke up this morning to the news saying that the tree pollen was high, and I vaguely remembered having a hard time breathing on my runs right prior to vacation, but it seemed to not sink in.

May 10: Right out of apartment complex to College Rd, behind the church, down Sunset, left onto S. Evergreen up to Elmwood, left onto Elmwood and up to Galaxie, left onto Galaxie and back along the regular route to home.
Distance: 1.5 miles
Time: no clock
Weather: 68 degrees, sunny and windy, feels like 68
Feeling: Need my inhaler before running.

So in thinking about running this week, I'm going to try to start running BEFORE work. Tomorrow I have to, because it's jeopardy night, and I'll be drinking.

Go Seawolves!

Last Runs on the Island

Ran the same run I described in my last post. Ran yesterday at 4 before going out for dinner and drinks with Scott and Leigh, and then ran this morning before I start my packing and checking out. :(

May 8: 11:18
May 9: 11:22

6 weeks of residency to go. Time to get back to the daily grind.

Ah, but first, I'm going to enjoy one last beach day. :)

Running in St. Maarten

Well, I've been here now for 6 days and don't want to leave. Well, part of me does ~ I'm ready to get the last 6 weeks of residency over ~ but I am enjoying doing nothing. But nothing can only go on so long.

So first, I'm going to talk about the run I've been doing in St. Maarten. Then I'll talk about who I ran into last night...

It's the same run every day, and here are the times:

May 4: 12:04 (that was right after the rain/in the rain and includes a slip down the hill)
May 5: 10:57 (and that was wet after the rain)
May 6: 11:18 (normal weather)
May 7: 10:42 (cooler than it's been, so it was really nice)

So here's the route:
Out of my timeshare, to the left, past 8 apartments, and up the stairs, up the stairs, up the stairs. Then up behind B building and around the parking lot. Then back down the hill, past the B pool, and into the next parking lot - out and back. Then down-down-down the hill, past the Red Piano to the Marina building and around the corner and up...but not far. Down the stairs by the Marina building and around the corner, down more stairs, and across the Aqua Marina deck. Over to the Marina Residencies and down and back around the pool. It's probably the most flat part of the whole area. So back across the Aqua Marina deck, then across the sand next to Choi, formerly los Gauchos, and I'm sure to be a different restaurant next year. Across the SAND. Then up the stairs by the Marina pool, down the ramp, through the parking lot, and now starts the uphill part. Up the hill on the Red Piano side, then across that parking lot, then up the hill on the Peli Deli side, then across the shortcut by Hollywood Casino, and then up-up-up the hill, er mountain, back to my timeshare. I'm sure I'm running over a mile, given my time (I'm usually at 7:30 minutes running around the Marina Residencies and 9 minutes by the time I get to the pool's parking lot, and since the beginning is more downhill than up, maybe I don't HAVE to run up the hill. But I'm getting faster, and I'm having fun.

So now, who did I SEE in St. Maarten? Scott and Leigh, at the bar last night. SERIOUSLY? I haven't seen them...probably since right after their wedding. So I'm sitting, reading my book, and I guess Leigh walked all around me to see if it was really me (they looked for my tattoo) and then, at some point, I looked up and saw them. And it took a while to register that it really was them...I mean, in St. Maarten? Of all places? So we had some drinks and some dessert and talked. It was nice. Made me miss Drew. He's the fourth of the foursome. And the love of my life...too bad our timing was always off.

So I've got two more runs in St. Maarten. Two more days on the beach (under the umbrella...I'm sufficiently sunburnt). Two more days in paradise. Until next year. :)

Happy May

So, May is here. Four months down of running a mile every day. Not too shabby.

May means one thing to me - St. Maarten! I bought my timeshare as an intern, and it's my third time here this year. Course, this year, I happen to be utterly broke, so it's going to be a budget St. Maarten trip, but that's okay with me. It's really about me, the beach, and a good book.

May 1: Ran at Bally's before my workout with Tristan. 7:50 mile, a little slow.
May 2: Galaxie Run before getting on my plane to St. Maarten.
May 3: 11:10 run around the Pelican complex.

So I've run into a little problem here. First, St. Maarten, and especially Pelican Resort, is VERY HILLY. Second, nothing is measured in miles here, it's all km (not that that is really a problem - 1600 meters, duh). Third, did I mention hilly?

So I decided that I know I run under a 10 minute mile. If I run downhill, I'll be running up hill as well at some point, so as long as I run more than 10 minutes, I should be fine. Plus, there's an area in front of the Marina that's flat - and I'll be incorporating that into my daily runs. The run today took me up to the top of the complex, around some parking lots (those are usually flat), down to the base, up the hill to the Marina, around the Marina, across the beach, and back UP the hill to my place. It reminded me of running Central Park in NYC.

Of course, there's an added benefit of running here - I jumped in the pool after my run. And I'm sure running into the ocean will happen with at least one of my runs. :)
